A tale of two questions: First, the baaaad one...
"My computer won't work, how can I fix it"
"what kind of computer is it"
"A Mac"
"What version of the OS"
"10.5.2"
"What model of Mac"
"an iMac"
"What are you seeing"
"I can't get on the internet..."
Now, the GOOD question:
"Hi, I have an iMac running 10.5.2, and I'm having some issues with getting
internet access. I have an ADSL connection with the modem attached to a 1TB
Time Capsule. When I try to attach wirelessly, I can see the network, and
authenticate to it, but I'm not getting my DHCP information. The same thing
happens when I connect to the Time Capsule via Ethernet. Here's some
snippets from system.log and console.log when I'm trying to connect. I can't
ping the Time Capsule either. Any ideas?"
Note how, with the first example, to get the information you have to have to
help the poster, you now play "What's in the poster's head". This wastes
everyone's time, and it sucks.
With the second question, while you still may need to ask more specific
questions, (PPC or Intel iMac, firmware rev on the Time Capsule, etc.), the
basic information has been provided:
You know the hardware and OS
You know the network connectivity, both internal and external
You know the iMac is using DHCP
You have some information from at least SOME logs
You know the poster did do at least SOMETHING to solve the problem first.
Which one is going to be easier to answer?
Yeah, I thought so. The second version. See, no one here is your personal
tech-slave. If you (collective, not specific) want help, it is a very, very
good idea to provide as much information as possible, so that the people who
know more than you and are giving you FREE HELP, can answer your question as
easily as possible. I know this isn't popular amongst many people, but they
have entitlement issues, so I don't care if they don't like being required
to do more than act like a baby bird.

Perhaps you should follow your own advice? Maybe, on a PROFESSIONAL list, it
is not too much to ask that someone asking a question provides good, basic
info.
