Reports of the death of Printer Access Protocol have been greatly
exaggerated. It's the result of a, um, smear campaign.

PAP is robust, well supported (still), and will not adversely affect
your network. It does not *typically* get routed between networks,
however. (For that matter, Bonjour isn't typically routed between
networks, either.)
I don't hesitate to use PAP when I know a printer supports it (most
do) and the workstation is stationary (or at least remains on the same
network). In my experience, PAP gives good feedback to the user on the
state of her or his print job. It's simple, it "just works" really
well.
