You may remember me for ranting about Server 10.5 before. I thought I
should post since I finally got Apple Mac OS X Server Open Directory
over kerberos working over the weekend. This is a big step for me.
I knew DNS was important but it seems that nothing 'advanced' will
ever work unless DNS is perfectly set up on the network your server is
on *before* you start installing Leopard Server.
In the book Mac OS X Server Essentials Second Edition, Installing and
configuring Max OS X Server, Initial Mac OS X Server Configuration, on
Page 41 it says: -
“Some services on Mac OS X Server either require a working fully
qualified domain name (FQDN) or will work better if one is available.
This relies upon the DNS server being present on your network, running
from another server.”
This should be in big bold red type. It is quite an understatement.
So, for 5 months, its *never* been possible (within my capability
anyway) to fix my server up properly because my home DMZ/DNS/IP
masquerading world did not have internal DNS to start with (it didnt
really need it before) and therefore open directory and kerberos were
(to me) unfixable.
One 'Erase and Install' and painstaking step by step implementation
later its finally working at least as far as open directory login with
portable homes, dns, ssh, afp, smb and ftp.
You may remember I previously said I thought this book was for
children. I eat a serving of humble pie.
