Appletalk has been going away since at least the Jaguar days if not
earlier.
Interesting, Appletalk is the first thing I'm asked to eliminate
whenever I go to a shop. Especially enterprise shops. :)
What do you mean by AppleTalk? Do you mean AppleTalk the network
protocol (same level as TCP), or do you mean AppleTalk-over-IP?
I am not advocating AppleTalk-over-IP as the best solution to
everything, and prefer other things over PAP (printing through
AppleTalk-over-IP), but it is still a valid method of doing things.
My recommendations away form it usually are because I want to have
print servers, and not many of them support PAP.
We have static IP and DNS set up for all our printers. Setting up a
printer is literally a matter of entering "RCK123" into the IP address
field, the driver is automagically selected (since we know our image
has all drivers for deployed printers; else we pkg/push). We only have
to select RAM, number of trays, etc. We don't see a need for Appletalk
in any of the shops we support, where Macs are spread over a WAN,
across the globe. DNS is clean, so anyone in HK or UK can print to any
US printer...literally (and they often do). :)
