AD/OD Setup

I am interested in hearing about AD/OD setups. It was suggested that all the Home Directories currently residing on 4 different Windows Server boxes be moved to two Xserves. All users (PC & Mac) would authenticate to the AD Directory and access their home folders via either afp or smb. Is anyone currently doing this ? We are a school with abut 600 users.
