Re: Parallels Server supports OSX Server as Guest OS

Outside of test, dev, and QA environments I don't see a lot of market actually. Mac OS X Server scales well enough to fully utilize a box. At that point splitting it isn't the solution, adding more hardware is.

As you'll notice I'm not pushing it for the OD master role. I can only realistically see it as a "hold the fort whilst I get another piece of hardware back online" :-)

I suppose from a DR standpoint you can use it to provide a rapid return to service if a host goes down.

The real issue though is the EULA. Anyone that has an existing VM farm would much rather add Mac OS X Server to that. As it stands now you must run it on a Mac in order to fire it up at all. What people have been asking me for is two things:

1. Run Mac OS X Server on ESX.
2. Run Mac OS X on ESX for VDI.

You can't do either right now. Maybe with a mix of Parallels Server and Aquaconnect you could find some sort of VDI solution, but that would also require everyone to run server for each instance.

Never once have I had anyone ask me about virtualizing Mac OS X Server on Mac OS X Server.

Apple picked the safest way to allow for virtualization in the EULA that they could.

Don't get me wrong here. I used to do a lot of ESX/GSX admin work and I know the benefits of virtualization. I've been using Parallels Server extensively for testing, but not for anything production.

... Everyone wants an ESX-style role - However we both agree it would be of benefit as a testing platform, although any chance of getting some reasonable performance metrics are compromised when you have the whole OS X kernel running underneath, I would be looking at this for functionality / compatibility testing.

I've also seen VMs floated as being a good training environment for OS X - "don't need too many boxes etc and you can always roll back to a snapshot if you want... " I've always thought this was an interesting concept - but it would mean that from a training perspective on any entry to mid level technical courses you have half a day at the beginning explaining how VM's work :-)
