Re: Parallels Server supports OSX Server as Guest OS

1. No, you do not need to obtain a different serial number for each instance, and the license does not say that.

Mac OS X Server can be volume licensed, or used under a developer license, both of which situations can result in having a single, legitimate serial number for multiple instances of Mac OS X Server.

The key is that each instance must be *licensed* properly, but that doesn't necessarily imply a different serial number.

2. On the issue of clones and snapshots, even if you have single-seat serial numbers for Mac OS X Server (which is the situation most folks are in), you do NOT have to have a different serial for each instance of Mac OS X Server. In this scenario, you need to have a unique serial for each instance of Mac OS X Server that will be *running and in use concurrently*, but you absolutely do not have to maintain unique serials and/or licenses for backups, snapshots, clones, etc.

This has been addressed time and again with software licenses.

The Leopard Server license says:

"This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Mac OS X Server software (the "Mac OS X Server Software") on a single Apple- labeled computer. You may also install and use other copies of Mac OS X Server Software on the same Apple-labeled computer, provided that you acquire an individual and valid license from Apple for each of these other copies of Mac OS X Server Software."

The key is "install and *use*". The "use" wording means that even if you're trying to read the letter of the license, clones/backups/ snapshots are not in "use" and are thus excluded. Also, any practical interpretation of any software license that does not explicitly prohibit the existence of backup or another installation, even if not in use, is always assumed in practice and under the law to allow for such use.

What would be a real world use for having this? Just curious.

Testing that new update before you decide to sink your production system into it.... Snapshot your server and test the update in a sandbox

Trialling new software.

Make better use of the 8 cores in your server - perhaps having an OD replica running virtualised as it doesn't really chew that much CPU load.
