Assuming error code 5 is the unix one, then it's symbolic name is "EIO" and indeed translates into "Input/output error".
That code is sometimes used as a catch-all one, but more often just means what it says: "I couldn't read from the disk or reliably write to it".
In a word, such errors generally are to be taken very, very seriously. :-(
