Hello,
I have a network of OS X computers (mostly Tiger, some Leopard), and each system has the same user accounts in the same order (same UID with each name). Each system's primary user is different, so as a result the logged in user at each system is different. With that as the premise, the situation I find myself in is as follows.
If I (jabrams) want to connect to a computer whose user is dstevens, and place files on dstevens' desktop, I have to connect as dstevens to do so. From a security standpoint, this requires that dstevens provide me with his password. I can provide myself (jabrams) with admin rights on the system that dstevens is using, but this still does not give me access to dstevens' desktop, though it does give me access to mounted drives. If I (jabrams) do not have admin rights on the system that dstevens is using, then I can access dstevens' drop box, but not the mounted drives.
We prefer to not drop files into shares on our OS X server as an intermediary step. dstevens does not want to connect to our server to download a file that I uploaded to the server for him. This is understandable, as the files have to be transferred twice (jabrams-->server-->dstevens) instead of once (jabrams-->dstevens).
So the crux of my issue is this. Is there a way to configure a client so that an admin user can connect to both mounted drives and the Public folder of other user accounts on a remote system? If not, what are the implications of changing access permissions on a user's Desktop folder so that other users can connect to a computer and drop files on the desktop of a different user's account? I think that changing permissions on a Desktop folder to make it read/write to remote users is a bad idea, but I might be wrong about that. I don't have an ACSA certification to backup my claim that this idea is a bad one.
If anyone can provide me with information on how to modify what is available via Personal File Sharing, or with sufficiently good reasons for not changing the access permissions on the Desktop folder, it would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading,
Jonathan
