Re: Typical setup for a mail server with different host and mail domain names?

Unfortunately, that doesn't fix my issues. In Directory.app, the mailing list link still opens a mail to groupname(at)server.example.org.

Furthermore, I get an error mail when sending to the group at groupname(at)example.org: <teamsserver(at)server.example.org> (expanded from <groupname(at)example.org>): mail for server.example.org loops back to myself.

Anyhow, the host name actually should be set to the name the MX record for the domain points to, since this is the name the server uses in the HELO when you're connecting to Port 25, or am I wrong here?

Any more hints? This can't be a super special requirement, is it?

Cheers, Thomas

Hi Thomas - i just set up my first leopard mail server last week and was stumped on that exact same problem for ages - it turns out the "host name" as it's called in Server Admin is misleading, it's not where you put the actual host name of the server - i.e. if you change it from server.example.org to just example.org you should find everything magically works as it's supposed to - that's what happened to me anyway!

hope that helps..

Hi all,

I want to set up my first Mac OS X Server. It will handle the external email traffic for our main domain (say example.org). After installing Mac OS X a few times and trying different settings, I'm stuck. The server is named say server.example.org. In Server Admin, under Mail Settings, the host name is set to server.example.org whereas the domain name is set to example.org.

My problem: The email addresses the server uses are user(at)server.example.org instead of user(at)example.org!

This is especially annoying for mailing lists. For group based mailing lists, the wrong email address is used in Directory.app, when displaying the group's details and klicking on the arrow next to "Mailing list": A new mail window appears with groupname(at)server.example.org. For mailman based mailing lists, the default address is listname(at)server.example.com initially, but I found a ways of setting this in the mailman admin interface. A bit of work, but feasible.

So now my question: For a typical mail server setup where the server's host name should be different from the domain served (server.example.org vs. example.org), which settings have to be made to achieve that email addresses always use the domain name name(at)example.org whereas links (like links to group wikis, mailing list admin pages etc.) always use the host name server.example.org? This seems to be a typical requirement for a mail server, so I'm surprised this neither can be setup intuitively using the built in tools nor isn't mentioned anywhere in the docs (there, the email addresses always use the host name as the domain part).

Best regards,
Thomas
