Anyone have any ideas why this might be the culprit in 10.5.3,
but not in 10.5.2?
This is entirely wrong from the premise. There's nothing wrong
with this "line" in *any* postfix installation, by itself.
I was not speaking of the line or of postfix, themselves. I was
noting that there is a change in behaviour from one version of
Server to the next. For me, Server is the glue between the Open-
Source products, and is used to modify the settings of the Open-
Source products. Server is the bit that Apple coded, over and above
the Open-Source products enclosed in Apple's 'wrapper' (I do
understand that Apple also did other things with Server, but they
are beyond the scope of this issue).
If I did not want this GUI or other elements of the 'glue,' I could
have used Mac OS as a standard Unix machine with the command line.
But, that's not why I was attracted to Server. It was the what the
GUI did (is supposed to do) that was/is the attraction, since all I
wanted was a simple set up with five virtual domains and all of two
users (but that's not the topic of this thread).
For the moment, to speak to this line:
smtp inet n - n - - smtpd
I have now confirmed that 10.5.2 did NOT uncomment this line when
setting SMTP to allow Incoming mail AND there existed a line(s) in
master.cf to replace it. 10.5.3 uncomments the line (I've now done
repeated testing on this to prove it beyond any shadow of doubt).
One can watch it happen 'live' in BBEdit. It makes no difference
whether there exist(s) other line(s) in the master.cf file to
accept mail on other ports. 10.5.3 is different from 10.5.2 in that
the former observes and reports only the above line, not other
lines that identify the use of other port(s) by postfix.
This is a significant change to the way the GUI works from one
version of Server to another, and may explain why several people
have reported the problem to the discussion list. Anyone seeing
that the checkbox has been unchecked would reasonably check it and
Save. This would turn on port 25 for postfix by uncommenting the
line above, even though 10.5.2 would not uncomment the line when
the 'change' was Saved.
The GUI in 10.5.3 now presents a discrepancy between the way posfix
is actually working and what the Mail > Settings > Allow Incoming
Mail check box indicates. It seems that, rather than provide in the
GUI a means for us to set the port for postfix to use, Apple in
10.5.3 has changed the way the checkbox indicates what postfix is
doing: 10.5.3 seems to now only indicate whether port 25 (only) is
active (in that the above line is un/commented).
It also implies that anyone else, like Jason Pruim, who uses assp
could easily run into this problem. We will have to remember NOT to
inadvertently 'correct' the 'problem' displayed in the 10.5.3 GUI. :-/
