Heh, heh... Just after posting, I realized exactly what I did that changed those error messages. So please disregard the second one. My symptom remains as:
swupd_syncd[pid] <Error>: swupd_syncd failed with SUCatalogLoaderException: We've been foiled by the SUCatalogLoader: no local display name. Drat.\n
Thanks!

Subject: Error running swupd on fresh Leopard server install

Hi there,
I have a fresh install of Leapord advanced server in a pre-production environment (my very first venture into Macworld), and everything is going swimmingly until I tried to set up Software Update Services.
There is no GUI error, but a few seconds after starting, the log says:
swupd_syncd[pid] <Error>: swupd_syncd failed with SUCatalogLoaderException: We've been foiled by the SUCatalogLoader: no local display name. Drat.\n
Later, (and I really don't think I changed anything related, but...) the errors switched to:
swupd_syncd[pid] <Error>: Unable to download upstream cataog index (was looking for http://swscan.apple.com/content/meta/mirror-config-1.plist)
I did find this post
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1412159&tstart=0
... in which I am told to check my file permissions. What files? What permissions do they need?
I will be quite surprised (and concerned) if this is actually a permissions issue -- both because it didn't work out-of-the-box and because the error message never would have led me to suspect file permissions.
Can anyone help?
