Just as an update, reindexing the drive doesn't seem to help. Is there any way I can find the Spotlight index for that volume and review it with a text editor?
Look in the folder called .Spotlight-V100 in the root directory of the volume.
Another thing to try would be to sit at the server, log in, and see if you can use Spotlight to find that same file.
Thanks Simon, wish I'd thought of that sooner myself. As is stands right now, neither Finder searches nor Spotlight bar searches turn up the test file. Will try again to reindex the disk and report my results.
Have you verified the directory structures on the disk? DiskWarrior might be
called for.
