Hi
It's probably Time Machine backups. Search the archives for more
details.
Very annoying, if someone has some ideas to use TM without shutting
down
mail services, a lot of people would appreciate

Thanks, I should've spotted that. Yes that is annoying. As a temporary
fix I'm going to switch to manual backups. Any idea how to do this
remotely via ssh?
I've tried:
serveradmin stop backup
but this seems to leave it idling...

I don't think you should be using Time Machine to backup a server
providing Internet Services such as Web or Mail. Put those services on
a separate machine and use a different backup strategy or, if you only
have one server providing both workgroup and Internet services, then
use an alternate backup strategy.
