Thanks, I should've spotted that. Yes that is annoying. As a temporary fix I'm going to switch to manual backups. Any idea how to do this remotely via ssh?

I've tried:

serveradmin stop backup

but this seems to leave it idling...

I don't think you should be using Time Machine to backup a server providing Internet Services such as Web or Mail. Put those services on a separate machine and use a different backup strategy or, if you only have one server providing both workgroup and Internet services, then use an alternate backup strategy.
