Hi Mark
Could you explain why you are having a 'forced' upgrade? Is it the current
G4 going twang or are you having to move to Leopard for other reasons (and
will your backup software work on it).
If it's the former, and approaching the problem from that direction, then
there are many G4 PowerMacs available second-hand that are in very good
condition, and a new hard drive and some RAM won't be expensive. Quite a
few G5's will work as well, as up to the Dual 2.0 and 2.3GHz (early 2005)
models had PCI slots, although these last two had 2GHz slots so it's worth
checking the specs of your existing SCSI card.
As far as the learning curve goes goes it obviously depends on what you are
doing with the server software. If you are just file serving then there is
not a great deal of difference and plenty of information available on the
net, but I think the consensus would be to do a clean install rather than an
upgrade to your current software.
Your backup software could be your main challenge, as the other aspects are
things that can be verified or checked relatively easily. If you are using
Retrospect then take a good look at the comments on this forum and others
about the latest builds etc.
