Time Machine Server over SMB? NFS? share points

Hello all --

I've successfully set up File Sharing on Mac OS X Server 10.5 on an Xserve to enable a Share Point with the "Enable as Time machine backup destination" check box checked, and I've had no problem using a MacBook with Time Machine to backup to this Share Point when using AFP.

I'm wondering if anyone has used SMB instead of AFP? What about NFS? I have tried with both NFS and SMB but Time Machine on the MacBook doesn't like it when the Share Points are mounted via NFS or AFP (in both cases I have first mounted the share points to the MacBook no problem such as via Go -> Connect to Server -> Browse). I have tried both with Guest access and no Guest access.

My guess is that there is something specific to Time Machine that AFP is preferred. However, I have also read that some NAS systems such as from HP MediaSmart support Time Machine in a manner similar to Mac OS X Server's "Time Machine Server" but I'm not sure if these third party vendors are using AFP or SMB or some other network protocol.

I'm wondering what others' experiences might be in this arena.

Thanks,

Serg
