That is where there is some inconsistency with the "OK for standard and workgroup but not for advanced" comment in the manual. Standard and workgroup configurations also rely on Open Directory - in fact the master OD domain is created automatically when you choose these configurations...


In fact, one of my customers used TM to backup his server, and when we had to restore the thing, the main issue we met was missing logs for some services (wikis and others). As soon as these logs were re- created, the server worked perfectly and has been up and running for months.
