We use ResourceSpace for something like this: http://www.resourcespace.org/

We use one installation of this to store images from confocal microscopes, a NeuroLucida, and normal DIC images. We worked out a system to identify each image with researcher, area of the brain, date, and any special information so it can be searched to quickly find what you want.

The second installation is for lab illustrations that have been used in manuscripts, grants, lectures, and seminar talks.

It's free, easy to install and customize, and works great for us.
