Depending on your requirements, you might consider startcom <http://www.startssl.com/ >. They have free certs, plus their wildcard / multihost cert is only US$ 30 per year. They have limited support for macos but I've managed to get their wildcard certs working for two years now on my servers.

Actually, the "limited support" for startssl.com certs is that their root certs aren't present in Windows.

Apple, Mozilla, and Opera include them, but not Microsoft/Windows. Yet.

Interesting. I seriously never knew that. I guess the only access to our site from Windows has been with Firefox et al., so I never actually realized that Windows itself wasn't supported.

I never looked into it because our site is a small, Mac-only research lab. The only access from Windows has been from a few of our student RAs working from home.

I do know that in the beginning, OS/X wasn't supported, so we had to avoid Safari or intervene manually. I was glad when that stopped.
