Re: Survey: XServe mail or other

Hi,

We are running the free version of Zimbra which uses Postfix, MySQL, Spam Assassin, Amavis, OpenLDAP.

I did eval there commercial product/support. Over all, very good however they have extensive user feedback/help on there forums.

Some notes (pasted form my previous post;

Its completely scriptable via there zmprov utility. I manage it via some Perl/shell scripts.

The free version uses CalDAV for iCal/Outlook integration and there pay for version supports iSync/MAPI.

Its pretty comprehensive but a draw back with the version I am using (v5) is that while it has external LDAP support, it doesn't support true external directory integration.

They are working on v6 which may have complete external LDAP/AD support but I don't mind as my work around is better for us (the env I am in) anyways.

Additionally, there was an unsupported how to on making your Zimbra server a central LDAP/Samba server, I tried it and it worked well.

I'm also syncing it to an OpenLDAP server which I plan to write up an FAQ soon on the Zimbra forums.

I also run it on a Xen domU (virtual guest) on Centos.

i have no experience with anything else other then Exchange and stand alone Sendmail/Postfix.

You may also want to try an open source setup called ECM2 based on Exim, CourierIMAP, MySql, SpamAssassin, Clam AntiVirus, ECM2Admin

Works well under high volume with unlimited virtual users (no
system users required).
I highly recommend this as well. Exim rocks over postfix IMNSHO, and
the management of users out of MySQL allows you to virtualize your
email users apart from your system users, which comes in handy for
many. It also neatly avoids all the OD issues with high volumes.

Does anyone have input on Zimbra? Their licensing costs seem to hit the sweet spot between FOSS and commercial products. Thanks for any input!
