Localized (meaning your) binaries and system binaries. You put your stuff in /usr/local, never the directories /bin and /sbin
Optional stuff provided by the OS vendor Honestly, break out a book like "Essential Systems Administration" by Frisch or Google. This is unix/sysadmin 101 type stuff. -d
