Re: Snow Leopard issues with Open Directory

I have a cluster that I have been working on for some time, but continually run into the same issue.  I can get one machine to connect to Open Directory without any issues, but I always run into strange issues whenever trying to connect the second compute node to the directory.

Most likely you have DNS issues.

The "head node" is running DNS, DHCP, NFS, and OD services.

If DNS for your zone is host off these

What are the two registered DNS servers (aka primary & secondary, though this concept is technically incorrect) for your zone? What is your zone? If this "head" node is running DNS for your zone where is the other DNS server and is it a slave or maintained separately? If a slave are the version ids in the zone file correct and the same? What are the DNS settings for both/all cluster members?

As far as I can tell, they are running perfectly.

And how did you confirm this? What does changeip report?

They are good enough for Kerberos, and I can even connect 1 compute node to the head node's Directory Service.  Whenever I set up the second server, however, I get always run into an error when trying to bind the the head node.

Can you post them exactly?

Compute node 2 will give error messages back interesting messages such as "There is already a computer in this directory with that name. ..."

Well that seems to be rather telling, doesn't it?

If I go into Workgroup Manager on the head node, delete the entry for Compute Node 2, and reboot the head node; then try to rebind, it will tell me that it either could not authenticate or that it could not find the server at the address.

Exact procedure you try? Error msg???

On the second attempt, it will again ask me if I want to overwrite the entry on the Head Node, but not allow me to because "Your account does not have privileges to overwrite the computer record ..."

Suggesting OD issues and/or issues with your diradmin account.

I tried to go into the logs to see what is the issue, but I can't find anything that is particularly helpful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I could go into much greater detail and post images.

Yes, you could provide some actual details. However the best guess based on your scant info is that you have a DNS issue.
