Well I tried that, but OD still seemed determined to use the interface whether it could get to it or not.


Well you should. It's required.

I know it's requited to have reverse DNS, but the required functionality is no different from having a separate router with a server behind it.  In that situation I could ignore the external IP and just set OD up on the internal network, where I can set a PTR up in 30 seconds and OD is happy.  It seems a bit of an omission.

This isn't a complicated setup, and doesn't need reverse DNS on the external interface, and dealing with BT to get one would cost more in time than just getting a router to sit in between the server and the modem.
