SquirrelMail is nothing magic. It's a IMAP client with a web GUI that talks to a IMAP server. That said you could install any other IMAP client just the same way you might choose Eudora, Outlook, or Thunderbird over Mail.app

This said, SquirrelMail is a very, very popular FOSS.
