continued email delays under 10.6 server

I continue to have degraded, delayed mail delivery under 10.6 server.
This seems to be OK after a reset/restart of the system, but trips up after a week or so.
Emails are delayed, uncharacteristically, anywhere from a few minutes to overnight.
Any suggestions?
