MkLinux Installation

Dear Bruce,

In order to install MkLinux, I would suggest that you go to the
following ftp site:
ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/mklinux-pre-R1/ppc/MacOS_Files/
Once you are at this site download the following files:
ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/mklinux-pre-R1/ppc/MacOS_Files/MkLinux-R1-G7.sit.bin

ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/mklinux-pre-R1/ppc/MacOS_Files/ReadMe

The ReadMe file at this site has detailed instructions on where to put
each file on your Mac partitions. This text of this ReadMe File
follows:
(from ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/mklinux-pre-R1/ppc/MacOS_Files/ReadMe
)
The files mklinux-R1G7.sit.bin and mklinux-R1G7.sit.hqx contain the
MacOS Side
files needed to install MkLinux. You will only need to download one of
these
files via ftp. The first is a MacBinary II format version of the
StuffIt
archive. The second is a binhexed version of the same archive. The
archive
contains the following files

Mach Kernel -- mach kernel image
MkLinux Booter -- system extension
MkLinux -- control panel
lilo.conf -- boot configuration file
MkLinux.prefs -- mklinux preferences file
mach_servers -- folder containing the first stage installer and
vmlinux
bootstrap.conf -- mach kernel configuration file
default_pager -- virtual memory manager
vmlinux+installer -- linux server with first stage installer

After you unpack the archive, follow the directions within the
MkLinux-R1G7 folder
to install MkLinux. These instructions were written for DR3 but are
still applicable
for this release.

You may also want to download the following:
ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/mklinux-pre-R1/ppc/MacOS_Files/doc.tar.gz as
well as
ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/mklinux-pre-R1/ppc/MacOS_Files/rescue_mach_servers_r5.sit.hqx

You can unpack the files using Stuffit Expander. You need to designate
what partition you have the folder named mach_servers containing the
bootstrap.conf, default_pager, and vmlinux+installer in your lilo.conf
file so that the Mach Kernel can find it.. I noticed when I read your
e-mail that you did not mention the mach_servers folder in your E-Mail.
This is most likely the cause of your problem. Once you do this, you
should be able to proceed with the MkLinux Installation. The Mach
Kernel will start the vmlinux+installer linux server with first stage
installer, which will then ask you what type of installation you want to
do (from a CD, a hard drive, ftp site, etc.) You will specify CD, and
then you will be able to proceed on with the installation.

This should work for you. I am not sure why the monolithic mklinux
installation kernel I mentioned to you in a previous E-Mail did not work
for you, but I am almost positive that this will work, if you follow the
instructions carefully and exactly.

A couple of other suggestions: Make sure that your root partition is
named / , not root; the swap partition should be named swap, the usr
partition should be named /usr, and the home partition should be named
/home. This is critical to the proper functioning of the Linux ext2
filesystem. Also, I would strongly recommend that you consider
installing the mklinux-pre-R1 distribution rather than the DR3
distribution, which is very badly out of date. For one thing, you will
not be able to do any upgrades to your software, because the glibc and
libc libs (system libraries which are essential to the functioning of
your Linux software) are not upgradeable on the DR3 distribution because
they are so outdated. The mklinux-pre-R1 distribution is more up to
date (based on RedHat Linux 6.0, I believe) (the more current RedHat
distributions are in the 8.xx incarnations at present.)

Please drop me a line if you have any further problems, or if this
doesn't make sense to you.

Best wishes,

Louis A. Reed
