Re: CD image install off hard disk

Hi

I want to know if I can install MKLinux from a hard disk instead of CD ie by
downloading an image of the CD off the internet. I'm attempting to get
MKlinux onto an 8100/100AV.

should I be downloading something like pub/cdimages/maindisk.img-old from
the ftp.mklinux.org <ftp://ftp.mklinux.org> site?

What should I change the lilo.conf : rootdev=/dev/hdc type thing to?

Thanks

Hi Mark,
Yes it is possible to download the image and install from a HD instead of the CD. DL the ftp://ftp.mklinux.org/pub/cdimages/maindisk.img not the old one. You can extract the Mac files from it and also pull off the entire RedHat directory on to your HD at the root level (not on the desktop but one click from the HD icon. IIRC that will mean you need at least 660+ meg HD to put it all on. Check the sizes to be sure. BE SURE you do not use HFS+ as your drive format, MkLinux recognizes only HFS on the Mac side.

Then when you boot into the installer you can select the HD you have the RedHat directory on and it will install correctly.

Use pdisk (In the Mac files subdirectory) to determine which is the drive (/dev) you should install on. Launch pdisk and type L and you will see something like this.

Top level command (? for help): L
ATAPI - unit not ready
ATA - couldn't get info

Partition map (with 512 byte blocks) on '/dev/ata2.0' (/dev/hde)
#: type name length base ( size )
1: Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1
2: Apple_Driver_ATA*Macintosh 64 @ 64
3: Apple_Driver_ATA*Macintosh 64 @ 128
4: Apple_Patches Patch Partition 512 @ 192
5: Apple_HFS "Bob_s Box-let" 14650000 @ 704 ( 7.0G)
6: Apple_Boot MOSX_OF3_Booter 16384 @ 14650704 ( 8.0M)
7: Apple_Loader SecondaryLoader 1024 @ 14667088
8: Apple_HFS Mac_OS_X 4971668 @ 14668112 ( 2.4G)
9: FWB Driver Components FWB Driver Components 1024 @ 19639780
10: Apple_Driver_ATA*Macintosh 76 @ 19640804

Device block size=512, Number of Blocks=19640880 (9.4G)

Obviously, I am not running MkLinux on this computer but your results will be similar. Look for the partition that has the type that you want. It will be clear. I.E. the size will be right and it will not be MacOS. I hope this helps.
