How do I .....? (was "how do you shutdown linux?")

Mark,

A perennial question that gets posted on all the Linux lists is asking
what Linux books do people recommend. Yes, the questions you've been
asking are very basic. We all asked them, or some like them...and still
do. Normally, man <subject> will get you the info you need. Whether you
can understand it is another story, hehehehehe.

I have several Linux books that seem to answer most of my basic
questions. The first two are published by O'Reilly, and belong on every
Linux user's bookshelf;

- Running Linux (3rd Edition) by Matt Welsh, et al.
- Linux in a Nutshell (3rd Edition) edited by Ellen Siever

The next one has an unusual layout, but I find it great to look up a
command quickly;

- Linux Desk Reference by Scott Hawkins

This last one was a great help in getting started. I don't use it much
anymore, but it still has a lot of good info that's presented and
explained so normal people can understand it.

- A Practical Guide to Linux by Mark G. Sobell

"Linux for Dummies" and Sam's "Learn Linux in 24 Hours" are okay as long
as you realize that they're *VERY* basic, and you'll throw them away
after the first reading. I just spent some time in Barnes & Noble and
read 'em there.

HTH.
