Static text appearance control appended to nav dialog

Hi,
I am building a custom nav services dialog. I can't get appearance manager
style static text times to display.
After receiving a kNavCBStart message I append a DITL using:
theErr = ::NavCustomControl(iNavDialog, kNavCtlAddControlList, mCustomDITL);

All the items in the DITL use the appearance manager CNTL type standard
controls. If the control type is StaticText (ProcID is 296) the control is
not drawn. Has anyone else encountered this? I have tried this with and
without a corresponding active 'dftb' item. The only way I was able to get
the static text to show up is to instead use the pre appearance manager
static text item.
