You seem to be mad at the wrong group. Doesn't the FSF control their own tree?

Well they do, but the main problem is the maintainer for the Objective-C front-end
for GCC is also the person who added @try/@catch so it is different situation than
you think. The main uses of the GNU runtime is the GNUStep project (which is a GNU
project also, just like GCC).

Isn't it the FSF's job to say, "Hey, we won't add this to our tree until you add GNU runtime support as well?"

The maintainers of GCC (the controllers of the situation) really did not objected to
anything and there were objections from the GNUStep group but since the two projects
really do not talk to each other that much until just recently there was nothing to be
done.

I would hope the FSF doesn't just accept arbitrary patches to their tree without some input in the process.

Well since the FSF appointed the GCC steering committee in 1999 who appointed Zem (who
was the wrote the patch to add it) to maintain Objective-C there was nothing really to
be done as the only people who have power is the GCC steering committee but they do
not like to get involved that much.

Also, are you sure the FSF didn't want @try/@catch/@finally support in their runtime?

I know that Alex is a developer of GNUStep and a respected one and also many other GNUStep members rejected the idea also.

Thanks,
Andrew Pinski
