Re: Objective-C++ on non-Apple platforms.

I think you'll find that GNUstep is a lot more than "somewhat functional" if you actually use it. I'm typing to you in GNUMail right now, which is an excellent GNUstep app which has also been ported to OS X.

I was not suggesting that GNUstep itself or applications using it are unsuitable for use, or the effort put towards it is pointless, or any other nonsense of that sort. I am familiar with GORM, ProjectCenter, GNUMail, and other GNUstep apps, and I know that GNUstep itself does provide a very nice environment to work with. It does not, unfortunately, integrate well with preexisting applications on some platforms (ie. Windows).

I know there was some talk of implementing a form of theming on the GNUstep mailing lists a while back, which would have allowed for such controversial things as horizontal menus and better consistancy when integrating with existing systems/platforms (KDE, GNOME, Windows, etc.). However, there seemed to be quite a bit of resistance to even allowing such things, even in a completely optional fashion.

If GNUstep could better integrate with existing desktops, I'd be more than happy to use it, as it is quite a powerful framework. Unfortunately, that is not the case at this moment. That's why I'd personally like to see tools that allow for Objective-C to be far more useful on platforms such as Windows, Linux and BSD than it currently is. And yes, that might mean creating an alternative to GNUstep.

Hostilities aside, has anybody managed to successfully get Apple's release of GCC (which includes Objective-C++ support) and their Objective-C runtime to compile and run under i386 Linux?
