Well, this may be, but we were talking about a server application, and I was
drawing an analogy to the Apache web server. Unless the Apache server
installed with Mac OS X uses a significantly different configuration from
the one I installed on my Solaris machine, the web server is started at boot
time as root and later sets its UID to something else (nobody). Also, I
thought I heard that anything put in Startup Items will be run as root,
which seems analogous to the old /etc/rc script on older BSD systems or the
/etc/init.d/ stuff on Solaris.

I admit it's been a while since I worked with Mac OS X. I guess I need to
keep reminding myself that it's neither Unix nor Mac, as I've come to know
them anyway.
