Re: Requesting 8-bit grayscale from the converter

Sorry, my earlier reply was incorrect with regard to 10.1.x. kPMGray_8 is only supported on Jaguar and later. In 10.1.x, specifying an 8-bit CG context produced an error message in Console (kCGErrorFailure : CGBitmapContextCreate: unsupported parameter) causing the converter to abort. This was due to our internal use of an RGB color space for all conversions.

However, Matt's running into a problem on Jaguar. I'm looking into that now.

I remember the original problem report from 10.1.x, but Paul has recently
indicated in this forum (and elsewhere) that support for this format *is*
supposed to be working now under Jaguar and Puma, and that the previously
reported problems were actually stemming from some issues that aren't
addressed in the sample code Apple provides. So, we're giving it another
shot.

If it works, it will save us some complexity and will hopefully provide some
speed improvements in a couple of cases that we're worried about. If not,
then we can continue using the existing RGB->Gray code in our PM. (But we'd
like to get that conversion for free! ;-)

From a message last year that Paul sent to the Tioga mailing list...this is
related to getting grayscale output from 10.1.x [which I also had a problem
with]. I haven't seen anything that says it was fixed for 10.2 [but I
haven't been digging through the printing stuff recently].
