Re: Passing user data to a PPD or the postscript stream?

Dave,

Your understanding is correct. The reason we don't allow a PDE to add arbitrary PostScript data to the JobTicket is because the JobTicket has to be converted into a cups option string and passed on the command line to the spooler and the server-side filters. Aside from the need to generate command line compatible strings (byte range limitations, special handling of ',' '/', etc.) there is the risk that we could overflow the command line buffer.

I'm trying to build a PDE that (among other things) allows the user to enter some custom text to be used as a watermark for a postscript printer. There does not seem to be a way for me to give arbitrary text (postscript code) from the PDE. I'm new to working on PPDs, so maybe I'm missing something.

In a previous posting (Sept 16th, 2002) it was mentioned that the only way to get a string the user entered from a PDE edit field to the printer would be to have the PPD file reference a custom CUPS filter that would intercept the job and modify the PS stream directly.

Is this still the case?

Also, if I have a printer that needs some custom end of job stuff added to the tail end of the stream, would I use that same mechanism to solve that as well?

Thanks,
Dave

There's an old proverb that says just about whatever you want it to.
