Re: Duplex binding direction

Hi Osamu,

The reason for not being able to do n-up and first from / remaining from with LaserWriter 8 is because the n-up code relies on the 'device' not changing during the print job. Changing the input slot does change the device and breaks n-up. Actually the same issue applies to PostScript printing on Mac OS X. Only we do not implement the dependency between first from / remaining from and n-up in the Print dialog UI.

In general we try to avoid inconsistencies between LaserWriter 8 and PostScript printing on Mac OS X. If your customers are complaining about specific issues (such as this one) please bring it to our attention.

Thanks.

Hi Paul,

Do you have any plans to synchronize to LaserWriter8 except for the duplexing?
For example, I can't select "first page from" function when I selected n-up at
LaserWriter8. But, I can select both at the same time with OS X. Is this action
which is different from LaserWriter8 made synchronism in the future? Can I think
that all of the action which is diffferent from LaserWriter8 will become the same
in the future?

Thank you.

Osamu

Koichiro,

Thanks for raising this issue. The short answer is that we plan to
synchronize duplex handling on X with the behavior you get with
LaserWriter 8 on Mac OS 9. The LaserWriter 8 driver had code to
handle duplex tumble/no-tumble in relation to the setting of the page
orientation buttons (portrait/landscape). When we add this code to the
Duplex PDE, you will see duplex behave correctly for different page
orientation settings, and different layout options also.

Hi, all.

I am developing PPD files for my PS printers.
I found PS drivers on OS 9 & X showed different behaviors
about duplex binding direction.

When I print a landscape document specifying duplex-no-tumble
(left-side button of binding setting), it is bound along
the left edge and not tumbled on OS 9.
On OS X, however, it is bound along the top edge and tumbled.
Printing the same document specifying duplex-tumble(right-side
button of binding setting), it is bound along the top edge on OS 9,
and along the left edge on OS X.

It seems that the left-side button of binding setting means
duplex-no-tumble on OS 9 and long-edge-binding on OS X,
although they share the same image of button.

Is this a bug or a new specification?
My customer complains about this inconsistency.

K.Mino
