I was trying to describe the same problem.

The discussion about the bad PPD was so that someone could easily see
the same behavior (using a bad PPD), and then look in the code and discern
if there was a way that well-formed PDEs might not be invoked when they
should be.

If you could come up with a guaranteed recipe for reproduction not
involving bad PPDs maybe you would get a better response than I did.

This is definitely a problem ( for both postscript and non-postscript
printers) and my guess is the solution must come from Apple. Our PDEs
should be getting called ( and mine does get called most of the time) but
sometimes they are not.
