It appears, upon closer examination, that testppd/ppdtest is
sensitive to the linefeed setting for the file, and expects Unix or
DOS linefeeds (0x0a); Mac linefeeds (0x0d) won't work.

That definitely should not be the case - we have our own line reading
function specifically to handle this sort of thing.

Try running your files through the test page at:

http://www.cups.org/testppd.php

That page will give you better information anyways (as will the
new cupstestppd program in newer versions of CUPS than come with
10.2.x)
