Getting printer name within cups backend

I must be missing something obvious, but I'm trying to call
cupsGetPPD(printername) from within my cups backend, but I don't see where
to get the printer name.

Also, what's the best way to go about installing a CUPS backend and related
printer(s)? While working on this I've put my PPD file & backend file in
place, restarted cupsd & used lpadmin to build my printer, but I'm hoping
for something less intrusive.
