FYI, It doesn't build on a vanilla OS X install. You have to install the headers from CUPS (which I think Apple should include in the Dev Tools). You also need to install HTMLDoc. The DDK docs Makefile does not work (missing the $HTMLDOC definition). I copied the definition from the CUPS Makefile, but even then the docs won't install. I finally just removed the docs from the top level Makefile and installed everything else.

Also, I wasn't sure from reading the license about whether or not the PPD compiler could be used to generate PPD files if they were for an OS X only closed-source distribution. Is that okay to do?

Yes, that is perfectly OK; I've added a FAQ to the DDK page for this.
Basically, think how GCC works - GPL'd compiler but the object files
can use any license they want...
