device-uri conflict?

I am installing a printer which is really a file-writer.
There is a custom backend, PDE, and PPD. All works very well, until I try to install one on a system which has already mounted another one just like it via Rendezvous from another computer which has printer sharing turned on.
Since my custom backend has a fixed device-uri, it conflicts, and refuses to install the local version.
Is there a way to work around this?
