These errors are produced by the printer driver reporting a fatal,
nonrecoverable error to the printing system. The error number they
use is private and specific to the printer driver. To diagnose the
kind of problem this is would require someone familiar with the
Canon driver (i.e. Canon) to comment.
Obviously a reproducible case would be quite helpful but from your
message it sounds like it is intermittent. I suggest filing a bug
with as much information as you can and we can potentially follow
up with Canon. Include specifics about the configuration (Mac OS X
version, printer driver version, etc) and a PDF representation of
the failing print job (using save as PDF) together with the print
settings information for the problematic print job.
The odd thing about this is that this computer can't print anything
from my app, but if any document is saved as PDF it can be printed by
Preview. A couple months ago the user didn't have this problem, but
may have upgraded to 10.4.3 since then.
I tend to hear about something like this once or twice a year and
it's always a Canon printer. Is it possible that there's some
printing data structure that I'm not initializing properly but it
almost never matters? Apparently there's something about my app
that's different than everything else on the machine. It might just
be that it's a Carbon app that doesn't use QuickDraw, but that must
be more common now than it used to be.
I have a CUPS error log and system profile from the affected computer
and I'm happy to submit a bug if it will help. Of course my main
priority is to figure out what's special about my app.
Nick
