These errors are produced by the printer driver reporting a fatal,

Obviously a reproducible case would be quite helpful but from your
message it sounds like it is intermittent. I suggest filing a bug
with as much information as you can and we can potentially follow
up with Canon. Include specifics about the configuration (Mac OS X
version, printer driver version, etc) and a PDF representation of
the failing print job (using save as PDF) together with the print
settings information for the problematic print job.
The odd thing about this is that this computer can't print anything
from my app, but if any document is saved as PDF it can be printed
by Preview. A couple months ago the user didn't have this problem,
but may have upgraded to 10.4.3 since then.
I tend to hear about something like this once or twice a year and
it's always a Canon printer. Is it possible that there's some
printing data structure that I'm not initializing properly but it
almost never matters? Apparently there's something about my app
that's different than everything else on the machine. It might
just be that it's a Carbon app that doesn't use QuickDraw, but that
must be more common now than it used to be.
I have a CUPS error log and system profile from the affected
computer and I'm happy to submit a bug if it will help. Of course
my main priority is to figure out what's special about my app.
I doubt seriously that it is something in your drawing if a saved PDF
document prints just fine. I'm wondering if it is something to do
with the user's print settings. For example, if your application
saves copy of print settings with its documents and you use those
print settings, you may have problems printing at a later time. That
is the most likely thing I can think of that would be related to
your application and something special it is doing.
I would certainly suggest that the user try the following to see if
it helps. I'd try each step, then attempt to print. If a given step
resolves the problem, stop making changes.
1) re-creating the print queue for the destination printer. For a USB
printer you can delete the print queue, unplug the USB printer, wait
a few seconds, and plug it back in. The print queue should be created
automatically.
2) make sure the user is printing without any saved presets
3) Reset the printing system, using the menu item in the "Printer
Setup Utility" menu in the Printer Setup Utility application
If the problem persists, I suggest including in the bug report a
sample document for your application that is problematic, specifics
as to what printer model, etc. and a pointer to your app or your app
itself if necessary.
