Generalized output device problems in Tiger

We've been seeing what seems to be a higher level of PostScript output
device problems in Tiger, compared to Panther. I'd like to make sure my
campus is taking steps to isolate and get feedback to Apple and individual
printer vendors, as necessary.

We're come across issues with standalone workgroup laser printers and
multi-function devices (printer/scanner/copier/faxes), and it has become a
source of aggravation. It's not limited to one class of device or one
vendor's devices. We've had everything from PostScript errors to print
failures to full-out printer resets and lockups since upgrading systems to
Tiger. I'd like to get to the bottom of it.

What sort of changes in Tiger are likely to have had an impact on PostScript
output? (CUPS revision, etc.) What steps are best for isolating the problems
to determine whether there is a system or device problem? (Let's assume that
we can already make sure that the operating system, applications, and
printer firmware are up to date.) How much of an effect could the driver/PPD
for a networked PostScript printer have? Does the protocol (LPR/LPD vs. IPP)
make much of a difference?
