Tiger PDF Printing woes

For the past few years, our scientists here have had a intermittent problems
when printing PDF documents. We'll get a PDF with certain mathematical or
scientific notation in it that I assume are causing the printing problems.
Sometimes we get a file that will print fine from Preview, but not from
Adobe Reader. Other times it is the opposite. Sometimes it will print fine
to our post-script enabled printers, but not the PCL printers. Again, other
times the opposite is true. And sometimes we will get combinations of both
application and printer required to print successfully. Since none of the
windows users are complaining about this, it seems to be a mac specific
issue. We have also tried on the postscript printers going from an HP print
driver to the Generic PostScript driver. This has occasionally helped, but a
week later we'll get a PDF that's the opposite way.

We're using Mac OS X Server's print server (10.4.10), and 10.4.10 clients.
Printers are usually HP 4250s (PS) and HP 3500s (PCL). When the documents
fail to print properly, we get the graphical layout of the page, but garbled
text, or symbols. I'm assuming this is due to a postscript error of some
sort.

What's most frustrating is that the same files print without issue from
Windows clients to our Windows 2003R2 print server. Any attempts to send
these from the Macs to the Windows queues results in severe postscript
errors (not even the graphics of the PDF are printed).

If anyone out there has some suggestions on why this is occuring, I'm all
ears. I would very much like to get things to the point where I have one
known reliable printing procedure, where we can print any pdf from the mac
to both a black and white, and color printer. If it can work for windows,
why not for mac?
