It is connected via USB.
It appears as though my filter does not get the Sigterm under Leopard.
Enable detailed debug logging with:
cupsctl LogLevel=debug2
and then look at the CUPS error_log file (/var/log/cups/error_log, visible in the Console utility when you click Show Log Files) while you cancel a job. The [Job NNN] messages should contain a cupsdStopJob reference with the "force" option set to 0...
It also appears that we can lock the USB somehow in the OS.
Do you provide your own USB class driver?

Yes, pause and cancel work exactly the same way from the perspective of the driver/filter.
