This command will often work for setting the default printer. However,
certainly under Mac OS X the default printer maybe read or configured
from multiple locations or systems. For instance the default printer
could be configured by the .lpoptions file. One location for this file
is within the the users home directory. Also, the machines global
settings, MCX or something else maybe managing the default printer on
the machine.
The command you are using will generally work in most clean Mac OSX
configurations. If you still need help, after looking inside the
~/.lpoptions file for the user then let me or someone else on the list
know. Then we can further investigate what else may be causing you to
have this issue.
Finally, some other questions for you :
(1) Are you issuing this command from the terminal?
(2) Is there any feed back from the command?
(3) Could you also type 'echo $?' after you issue the command.
The result will be the exited status of the lpadmin command.
If the lpadmin command was was successful it should be zero.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
I have a question about a unix command "lpadmin -d" and Printer &
Fax pane in the System Preferences.
I figured out that when Itry to do "lpadmin -d PrinterName" to
change my default printer, the default printer isnot changed in the
Printer & Fax pane. In the "localhost:631/printers", the default
printer has been changed to the printer that I want to. Sometimes it
is changed correctly, but that is not good enough.
Does anyone know other ways to change default printer "by unix
command" or"programmatically"?
Thanks in advance,
Brandon
