I think what he's telling you to do will work under 10.4. However, I know
that under 10.5, if you have "Last Printer Used" selected in the Print & Fax
prefs panel, this overrides the setting made with lpadmin. In that case, you
have to:

/usr/bin/defaults -currentHost write com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs
UseLastPrinterAsCurrentPrinter 0

in addition to the lpadmin command. And of course you may want to remember
that pref and restore it when you're done.

BTW, I don't remember under what circumstances the change is reflected in
the Print & Fax prefs panel...
