Unlike everyone else who suggested their favorite programming language, I'm going to suggest RealBASIC.

Start with something that lets you grasp the concepts of manipulating the machine in response to the user. Something that lets you create a few simple projects that work. Something that doesn't require you to learn as much about the tools as the rest of the process.

Personally, I think that ObjectiveC will seem like a reasonable step up from RealBASIC, just the syntax will be C instead of BASIC.
