Can't open pdf files with IKImageView

I am following the ImageKitProgrammingGuide tutorial. I am running OS 10.5.2. The sample code for "Supporting Opening Image Files" contains the NSString extensions pdf/PDF. I copied the code directly from the guide. My problem is that while I can select a pdf file in the open panel, nothing happens. The selected pdf file does not load into the IKImageView. TIFF and JPG open, just not pdf? What's up?
