OK, maybe I was being confused by the use of the term "Gamma". I read this as being a way of setting a gamma curve by by setting the gamma value (ie. one value per color, e.g. 1.8 or 2.2), rather than a table of values defining a transfer curve. Thanks for clearing that up.
